2010 NFL Mock Draft

1. St. Louis Rams
Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
Although there are exceptions that test the rule (the 2006 Chicago Bears spring to mind): a team's more likely to lose games despite having a good quarterback than they are to win despite having a poor one. Unless an unexpected cut happens, the way Pennington fell into Miami's lap a couple of season's ago (or unless Brett Favre's ego decides it wants to see if he can take a team from worst to first), the Rams absolutely have to take a chance here on landing a good, young quarterback. There's no guarantees, and Clausen isn't as highly-rated a prospect as some QBs that have come out in recent years, but he's a three-year starter whose completion percentage and yards per attempt showed significant improvement in each of his three years at Notre Dame. Ndamukong Suh is a strong possibility, of course, but the Rams have taken a defensive linemen first in four of the last nine drafts, including two of the last three, and they're not going anywhere with the QBs they have.

2. Detroit Lions
Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
I don't know that there's a better argument for picking Suh here than this: Detroit's best defensive tackle last season was Grady Jackson. Although there's not much precedent for a DT coming in and having an impact right away, Suh is as good as advertised and, with just a little help along the line, should be playing at an All-Pro level within three seasons.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
Speaking of teams with poor defensive tackles, the Bucs are actually worse off than the Lions. Featuring Chris Hovan, Ryan Sims, and Roy Miller, the Bucs fielded the worst rotation in the league. McCoy's a smart, athletic DT who is right there with Suh in terms of potential.

4. Washington Redskins
Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
Washington's offensive line was a disaster in 09 and with long-time left tackle Chris Samuels very likely having to retire due to his neck injury, the Skins need to start rebuilding this unit immediately. If Sam Bradford shows enough during his workouts leading up to the draft, this would be a natural landing spot for him, but for my money he has a lot of work to do to get chosen this high.

5. Kansas City Chiefs
Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
Getting scared when you're a young man and lying about something you did is not uncommon. And the fact that what Bryant was lying about wasn't, in the big scheme of things, a huge deal, shouldn't mean so much when team's start putting those red flags next to players' names. In terms of on-field ability, Bryant was right up there with Michael Crabtree and I'd even give him the edge in raw playmaking ability. While I tend to believe you can find WRs, like RBs, throughout the draft and so it's generally not worth it to use a high pick on one, Bryant has special talent and would be worth it. That said, the Chiefs have a lot of needs, and Tennessee safety Eric Berry or Alabama middle linebacker Rolando McClain would also make a lot of sense here.

6. Seattle Seahawks
Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
The Seattle defense was bad last year, but what was easy to overlook was that they played the run well with their rush defense posting a -8.8% DVOA. Unfortunately the Seahawks were third worst in the league at defending the pass (33% DVOA). With new offensive line coach Alex Gibbs being an expert at coaching up lower-round draft picks, Seattle can afford to go defense with this pick and try to shore up the O-line later. And Seattle is another spot Sam Bradford could land if he works out well and Seattle wants to focus on finding their future signal caller.

7. Cleveland Browns
Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Bradford is a huge question mark at this point, but the Browns can't be content to proceed with Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson as their only options at QB.

8. Oakland Raiders
Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
We'll probably have a clearer picture of who Al Davis will draft after the official 40 times are posted at the NFL combine, but until then let's say the Raiders go with speedy cornerback Patrick Robinson to help out with their pass defense which was pretty bad despite having the sixth-best adjusted sack rate and Nnamdi Asomugha covering one side of the field. If Robinson isn't as fast on the track as he is on the field, then another good Al Davis option would be safety Taylor Mays: if he runs the 40 in under 4.5 seconds at 6'3" and 230 lbs, it will be hard for Mr. Davis to look at anyone else.

9. Buffalo Bills
Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
Even before injuries decimated their offensive line the Bills struggled in pass protection. Neither Demetrius Bell nor Jonathan Scott came close to adequately filling the left tackle spot vacated by the Jason Peters trade.

10. Jacksonville Jaguars
Joe Haden, CB, Florida
With the tenth pick in the NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select University of Florida cornerback, Joe Haden. Selecting Tim Tebow here might sell tickets for a season or two, but the better long-term economic strategy is winning. And besides, Tebow should still be available in round two or three. More to the point: the Jaguars defense was incredibly unbalanced: they had the worst pass defense (39.7% DVOA) and the seventh best rush defense (-12% DVOA).

11. Denver Broncos (from Chicago Bears)
Rolando McClain, MLB, Alabama
Andra Davis played well at inside backer for his new team but he wore down as the season went on and will be 32 by the end of next season. The other inside backer D.J. Williams was serviceable at best in the new 3-4 scheme. Rolando McClain brings great value at this slot and would be a perfect addition to the rebuilt Broncos D.

12. Miami Dolphins
Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas
Will Kindle's off-field trouble keep Parcells & co away? If Kindle can prove that he has any kind of head on his shoulders, any sense of what kind of player he can be and the willingness to do what it takes to make that happen, Miami can pull the trigger and take a chance on him. Starting outside linebackers Jason Taylor and Joey Porter are nearing the end of their careers and neither played particularly well last year with Porter especially seeing a drop off in his play.

13. San Francisco 49ers
Brian Price, DT, UCLA
The 49ers are a quarterback away from being a championship-qaulity team, but with no QB left on the board, I think they'll look to keeping their front seven stocked, although defensive back would garner strong consideration as well.

14. Seattle Seahawks (from Denver Broncos)
C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
Spiller would not only add a sorely missing explosive element to the Seattle run game, but he would go a long way toward improving their woeful return game as well.

15. New York Giants
Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
The Giants are still one of the most talented teams in the league and with Kenny Phillips and Antonio Pierce coming back from injury they can afford to go best player available.

2009 NFL Mock Draft

1. Detroit Lions

The Lions have three of the first thirty-three picks in a draft deep in offensive tackle prospects but shallow as ever in prospective franchise QBs, so I think it makes sense to grab the QB first and the OT later.

2. St. Louis Rams
Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
I still have some reservations about Andre Smith's pass blocking, but for now he seems to be the closest thing to the consensus number one OT. Whether it's Andre Smith, Jason Smith, or Eugene Monroe, the Rams need to finally find their replacement for Orlando Pace.

3. Kansas City Chiefs
Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
If the Lions pass on Stafford, then I think the Chiefs have to take him, but otherwise they need to address their defensive front seven. I had Michael Crabtree going here in my first mock, but as good as Crabtree is, with Scott Pioli now in charge in KC, I think he's too smart to select a WR when the Chiefs are so awful at pressuring the QB.

4. Seattle Seahawks
Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
I like Crabtree a lot, and it's true the Seahawks haven't had a bona fide number one receiver in some time, but if I were in Seattle's front office, I'd be pushing to select one of the great left tackle prospects in this draft who could be Walter Jones's eventual replacement.

5. Cleveland Browns
Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
Davis has been making standout plays since he was a freshman and I can't believe he's not the highest-rated corner on most draftniks' boards. He's a perfect fit for Mangini's defensive scheme.

6. Cincinnati Bengals
Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
A position of strength on the Cincinnati roster just two years ago, the Bengals have few options at either tackle spot right now.

7. Oakland Raiders
Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Given a need at both positions I would always take a top offensive tackle prospect over a wide receiver, but Al Davis doesn't think that way. Speed rules in Mr. Davis's mind.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars
Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
If the last three seasons have proved anything it's that a rookie left tackle can step in and play at a very high level (see Marcus McNeil, Joe Thomas, Ryan Clady and Jake Long). The Jags will be hoping Smith or one of other top OT can step in and be an immediate upgrade over Khalif Barnes, a serviceable tackle likely to leave via free agency.

9. Green Bay Packers
Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State
NT B.J. Raji and OT Michael Oher both would also make sense here, but the Packers absolutely have to get another pass rusher to play OLB if they're truly going to transition to a base 3-4.

10. San Francisco 49ers
B.J. Raji, NT, Boston College
It might not be as much of a need as right tackle, free safety, wide receiver, or a pass rusher, but if the 49ers truly want to play Fysical football, then they need to go with the value on the board and upgrade their defensive line.

11. Buffalo Bills
Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
For my money the best pure linebacker in the draft, Curry brings great value here, although the Bills could also stand to add a pass rusher like Aaron Maybin or Larry English or tight end Brandon Pettigrew.

12. Denver Broncos
Rey Maualuga, MLB, USC
B.J. Raji would be the best pick for the Broncos since he would be the biggest help in their transition to a 3-4 defense. With him off the board, Denver will have to add a different piece of the 3-4 puzzle. I think Aaron Curry would be a great fit and that Maualuga is a bit overrated, but sometimes you have to dance with who's available.

13. Washington Redskins
Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State
Maybin could learn some of the tricks of the trade from one of the best, Jason Taylor, while he gets the necessary time he'll need to acclimate to the pro game.

14. New Orleans Saints
Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
The Saints have been trying to fill holes in their secondary for years now, so they could be very happy to find Jenkins, who many view as a top-ten talent, available here. I think he's a bit overrated myself and might be better suited as a free safety at the next level.

15. Houston Texans
Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
I don't think Johnson warrants a first round selection, but I can see how the Texans might view him as a potential perfect bookend to Mario Williams, especially down the road after Johnson has a year of NFL conditioning.

16. San Diego Chargers
Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
Losing right defensive end Igor Olshansky to free agency shouldn't hurt too much, since he lost his starting job last season, but the Chargers still need to bolster their front three, and Jackson has the size and skill set to play 3-4 DE, though he's another overrated prospect in my opinion.

17. New York Jets
Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
When he came out, I had high expectations for Kellen Clemens, but he didn't look so hot when he had his chance to play in 2007. It doesn't seem likely that either he or Brett Ratliff are the future starters.

18. Chicago Bears
Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee
The Bears defensive ends are getting up there in age and Ayers is arguably the best base DE prospect in this year's draft.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi
The Bucs get a gift as Oher falls all the way to the nineteenth pick.

20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas Cowboys)
Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
Having taken a franchise QB with the first pick, the Lions can turn their focus to shoring up the offensive line.

21. Philadelphia Eagles

The Vikings have the best DT tandem in the league, but they need to think about the future given Pat Williams age, and with all of the top offensive linemen off the board, it makes sense to go where the value is.

If the draft turns out this way, I'll be cursing the first twenty-two teams who picked for letting English get to the Pats. Given the way Bellichick collects tight ends, don't be surprised if Brandon Pettigrew (should he still be on the board) goes here even though the Pats have Ben Watson and Dave Thomas.

24. Atlanta Falcons
Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
I guess this would be another huge steal, but I'm not sold on Harvin's potential as a pro. He could be a fine complement to Roddy White, and given a creative offensive scheme that gets him the ball he could be a dangerous weapon, I just hink he's a bit overrated.

This might be a bit high for Brace, but there just aren't that many quality nose tackle prospects.

Pittsburgh's offensive line played better as the year went on, but an upgrade in the interior of the line is still much needed if they don't want to see Big Ben keep getting knocked silly.

2008 Linebacker Ratings

Decided to go ahead and see how my defensive rating system would rate the linebackers. Because tackles are taken into consideration, LBs have higher ratings than the defensive linemen. So this isn't a good system for comparing one position to another, but it still looks like it does a pretty good job of comparing players at the same position. Doesn't mean I think it's perfect. Half way through the season I wouldn't have quibbled too much with Barrett Ruud showing up as the top-rated middle/inside backer, but at this point my overriding impressions of his 2008 season are his whiffs in the Carolina and Oakland games when the Bucs were fighting for a playoff spot. Still, I wouldn't place him lower than fourth, and in fact I'd say the top four names on the below list correspond to what would be the top four names on most observers' lists. If I hadn't added total scrimmage plays into the equation then those four would have come out in the following order: Patrick Willis, Jon Beason, Ruud, and Ray Lewis (tied with Jonathan Vilma). The fact that the scrimmage plays push Lewis's rating higher after the outstanding year he had, and put him above Vilma by 8.4 points, confirm for me that it's better to include them.

11 Highest-rated Inside Linebackers


The outside linebacker ratings confirm (well for me at least) two opinions I had: DeMarcus Ware probably should have been Defensive Player of the Year (though I wouldn't make a big stink about it, James Harrison was certainly worthy), and Karlos Dansby was the best 4-3 outside backer: it is a minor travesty that he didn't get a single AP All-Pro vote. Only one of those went to a 4-3 guy and that was by some Rip Van Winkle who voted for Derrick Brooks (Brooks rated an 86.8, good enough for 19th). Without the scrimmage plays adjustment, Thomas Davis would have moved up to third, knocking Harrison to fourth; also, Lance Briggs would have moved up to fifth and Chad Greenway would have slid down to sixth.

2008 Defensive Tackle Ratings

Ask observant NFL fans who the best defensive tackles were in 2008 and I'm pretty sure there are five names that will consistently come up: Albert Haynesworth, Kevin Williams, Shaun Rogers, Jay Ratliff, and Haloti Ngata. Jamal Williams, Fred Robbins, and Kris Jenkins (who had been having a very strong season before seeing his level of play fall off in the last handful of games) would also likely be mentioned quite a bit, as probably would Darnell Dockett (especially now with the Cards doing so well in the playoffs). Using the statistical rating system I discussed in the previous posts, those names all show up near the top (nine of the top fourteen spots). Anyway, here are the twenty defensive tackles with the highest ratings. Pat Williams would have had a shot at being twentieth if he hadn't missed the last two games.

Kept changing my mind this year as to who the All Pro defensive ends should be: Justin Tuck, Jared Allen, Julius Peppers, Trent Cole. John Abraham and Mario Williams weren't completely out of the running either. I came up with a simple little stats-based rating system to help me choose. Cole and Tuck came out on top (tied) and I was going to put them on my team until I found some mistakes with the stat site I used. I reran the numbers with less data and Peppers and Abraham came out one, two (tied actually). When I finally posted my All Pro team the other day I decided on Tuck and Peppers. Subsequently I tracked down the complete, correct stats. Cole comes out on top again. Leaving him off my All Pro team had already been bothering me, even though he doesn't have the double digit sack numbers you usually like to see from an All Pro end, but now I've gone back and changed Peppers out for Cole.

I thought the ratings might be of some general interest so I'll post them here. I didn't run the numbers on every DE. The stats used are: Sacks, tackles for loss, forced fumbles, interceptions, solo tackles, and passes defended.

In the Trenches: 2007 week eight

Unfortunately there were only three NFL Replay games for week eight. But at least I got my first look at the Carolina Panthers, and overall the line play was pretty good, especially at right tackle where no one had a below average Blocker Rating.

Left Tackle

For the third time (out of three 2007 season games reviewed so far) Matt Light puts up an above average BR. I'm surprised he has done so well, though I expect his play will drop off later in the season. I still say Chris Samuels is one of the best left tackles in the game, and definitely one of the most fun to watch, even though his 8.57 BR on the season so far ranks only ninth (and no, I'm not a Redskins fan). Levi Jones looked off on his game and was most ineffective with his run blocking (6.75 RBR). Charlie Johnson struggled in both pass and run blocking and easily had the worst game of any of this week's linemen.

Left Guard

Finally, I got to review a game in which Logan Mankins looked like one of the NFL's top guards. Unfortunately for Jets fans, Alan Faneca was once again less effective than the average left guard; on the other hand, he should still be about nine plays per game better than Adrien Clarke. For Jets fans keeping score at home here are the relevant 2007 BRs so far: Pete Kendall, 8.64 BR (242 plays); Faneca, 8.29 BR (161 plays); Clarke, 7.39 BR (95 plays).

Center

As bad as Mahan looked the first time I reviewed one of his games, he has been decent the second two times. Really all of the centers this week were just that: decent, average. Except for Dan Koppen who, like his Patriot linemates, dominated the Redskins defensive front.

Right Guard

Including Super Bowl XLII, I've now reviewed four Patriots games, and in each game Stephen Neal has outperformed Logan Mankins. Neal doesn't have the same ability at pulling that Mankins does, but he seems to be stronger at the point of attack and more effective with blocks at the second level. Bobbie Williams had a relatively mistake-free game, but despite having the highest BR of the week, "steady" and "solid" seem like more apt descriptions of his game than "dominant" or even "great."

Right Tackle

The only below-average right tackle this week was New England's Ryan O'Callaghan who is not listed above because he was only in for six plays. Stacy Andrews, who had looked awful at left guard early in the year, did very well in both pass and run blocking. Nick Kaczur, like teammate Matt Light, continues to surprise. Willie Colon is shaping up to be the Steelers' top offensive lineman. Though I don't chart it due to the extra time it would take, I'd say that Todd Wade had the most double-team help of any of these other tackles and is definitely playing at a level a notch or two below all of them.

Left Tackle

Though he made some rookie blunders, Baltimore's Jared Gaither was way more impressive than Arizona's more heralded rookie, Levi Brown, who was a definite step down from starter Mike Gandy. Jason Peters once again scored surprisingly low; he had a lopsided game, doing very well in pass protection (9.32 PBR) but not so much in the running game (7.12 RBR).

Left Guard

Alan Faneca looked much better against the Broncos than he had against the Cardinals, but it still wasn't a stellar game. Jason Brown continues to perform well and is now the highest rated left guard on the season. Chester Pitts's rating is artificially high: in the NFL Replay version of the Titans-Texans game, three or four Texans three-and-outs were cut out, leaving the Texans with only five running plays to review; pass blocker ratings are higher than run blocker ratings, and left guards (along with centers) have the biggest difference (seven tenths).

Center

Re: Mike Flanagan, see the comment on Chester Pitts above. Even with a good game against the Eagles, Olin Kreutz is still below average for the season. I've seen enough of Kevin Mawae now to say he's still one of the top centers in the league. Mike Pucillo rebounded from his awful week-six appearance, turning in a serviceable game. Melvin Fowler had a great game against the Broncos and a decent game against the Colts, but struggled noticeably against the Ravens.

Right Guard

The list of the top-rated guards (left or right) for the 2007 season now goes like this: Leonard Davis, Cowboys (9.39 BR, 147 plays), Shawn Andrews, Eagles (9.29 BR, 63 plays), Chris Snee, Giants (9.23 BR, 162 plays). Yes, they're all in the NFC East; and unsung Giant lineman Rich Seubert is fifth (behind Jason Brown) with a 9.04 BR.

Right Tackle

Marshal Yanda just keeps having good games, as does David Stewart. They're the second and sixth rated right tackles so far on the season.
